A short cookbook

method – or madness
cooking with your hands

tal’s baga bread:

  1. add to bread machine:
  2. yeast
  3. heaping cup white flour
  4. heaping cup ww flour
  5. sunflower seeds
  6. molasses
  7. salt
  8. two squished handfuls of cooked rutabaga
  9. cup of hot water

a fine rib sauce

  1. all the leftover ginger marinade in the fridge
  2. peanut butter
  3. ketchup
  4. half glass of red wine
  5. juice of half a very strange looking lemon
  6. cup of watermelon juice
  7. marinade some latino cut ribs and pour over while cooking.

curry soup for arra

  1. light the largest burner you have
  2. put a heavy skillet on the burner
  3. leave it there for a long time
  4. a really long time
  5. pour in a cup or two of peanut oil
  6. while that gets ferociously hot, slice up a pound of tofu into some sort of ergonomically appropriate rectangular shapes
  7. attempt to put the tofu into the hot oil all at once without starting a large fire, or spilling hot oil on your bare feet. barely missed mine.
  8. light another burner under another skillet.
  9. now figure out what to make the soup out of.
  10. get your girlfriend to rummage around in the fridge for some carbs while you frantically chop up the last onion in the house and 4 cloves of garlic and pretend you know what you are doing.
  11. saute the onion and garlic in some olive oil – by now the tofu, (remember the tofu?) you left it on high didn’t you? will have fried it’s little brains out and you can strain it (i recommend one of those moon shaped strainers with a handle that you can pour the liquid out of a skillet with) into a third pan and toss it into the onions. your girlfriend located some leftover sweet potatoes and squash, so cube them up and toss them in. run outside for some herbs, the rosemary is handy, and there is plenty of oregano and basil, but we know that’s not going to cover all the bases. the whole concept is still very vague and flavorless. hmmm. the fried tofu reminds me of the fried tofu in the tofu curry at the thai restaurant, and by god, there is some coconut milk on the shelf. not only that but there is a bottle of pickled mangoes right next to it. a dollop of that and a dollop of chicken broth concentrate and voila! soup!

  1. I think the fine rib sauce was wonderful! I shared it on a very special occasion with my ex-boyfriends. Please email me more great sauce ideas!
