kathy dent – sarasota elections

Filed under: neighborhood, politics — matthew @ 2:51 pm

Update: Despite continued and strident calls for a revote, the Sarasota Elections Commission, with Paul Mercier heading it up, certified what is probably the most clearly defective election in florida.
This just in from a correspondent in Sarasota Florida – Steve Runfeldt -
Hi,

The following photos document incidents in Sarasota County at precincts 4 and 22 on November 7, 2006. There were four main incidents.

1. The opening tape for pct 22 that was posted on the door of the polling place showed that only three machines had been zeroed that morning. 10 machines were in use during the day. At the end of the day the closing tapes showed that the remaining seven machines had been zeroed at about 6:30 am, about 45 minutes prior to the three machines shown on the opening tape. The poll clerk was instructed not to speak to me, the elected Democratic Precinct Committeeman, and the County Supervisor of Elections refused to answer direct questions about the anomaly. The following day, in a press conference, Supervisor Kathy Dent stated that the battery in an activator had died and so they switched to a new activator. None of this information was forthcoming on Nov. 7. (more…)

bay view, ac, nice kitchen, 102 yrs old

that pretty well sums up the house i’m in. of course there is some subtext and some history in there as well. 102 years should accumulate some history. of course i’m only cognizant of the last 25 yrs and only knowledgeable of the last 4. no hurricanes to report since 1926. that one came up the west coast of florida about 50 miles offshore with winds of 150 mph. in late september.

the news from sarasota… pre-hurricane

Filed under: neighborhood — matthew @ 2:39 am

everybody seems to be just fine here, at least they aren’t shooting anyone. i’m still looking for a girlfriend, but what else is new? my airconditioner works, and for that i am exceedingly grateful…

a large local homebuilder went belly up on tuesday with 71 houses in various states of completion. the company had sold 123 houses in 2005 and had sold 4 in 2006. i’d go belly up too. methinks the realestate boom is slackening hereabouts. i see an occasional terror in the eyes of people who have bought houses as investments in the last year. of course the median price of 335K is still a bargain compared to say, oakland ca, with a median price of $600K.

the development across the street, which has been the subject of much controversy, has yet to sell a lot in two years. i awake at 7am to the lovely tune of reverse horns on the earthmoving equipment, and i can tell you, they spend at least as much time in reverse as otherwise..
